n January, WPI unveiled a new look for its Web site: www.wpi.edu. "The new design features photographs, graphics and enhanced navigational aids that spotlight WPI programs and opportunities," says Web Coordinator Amy L. Marr. "A presence in cyberspace is one way to invite people into your universe. This Web site offers a continually evolving window on WPI's world."
"The rotating series of photographs, each linked to its own story, enables us to demonstrate in a powerful way our heritage of innovation, our unique and exciting programs, and our excellence in technology," adds Gordon Library Director Helen M. Shuster, who has chaired WPI's Web Committee since its inception as the Web Design Committee in 1995. The first WPI Web site appeared shortly thereafter. The latest incarnation retains the site's user-friendly organization and access.
The WPI Web is served by two Aspen Durango II Alpha systems (533 MHz) that share information through a private 100-megabit Ethernet connection. These servers were made possible through a gift from the Class of 1957.
"The Class of '57 entered WPI just at the dawn of the Computer Age," says class chair Charles Stasey. "We appreciate the importance of computers and the Internet, the significant opportunities for instant communication, and the value for graduates as well as students to keep in touch and to assist each other and WPI in so many ways."
