Inauguration, major symposium set for Sept. 20
The formal inauguration of Edward A. Parrish, WPI's 14th president, will begin on Friday, Sept. 20. The investiture will be held at 10 a.m. in Harrington Auditorium; Claire L. Gaudiani, president of Connecticut College, will be the keynote speaker.
The inauguration activities have been planned to coincide with Homecoming Weekend and the annual President's Advisory Committee reception and dinner. A major symposium, "The New Liberal Education for the Age of Technology," will be held at 2 p.m. in Alden Memorial.
"The symposium will include participants from industry, education and government," says Professor and Mechanical Engineering Department Head Emeritus Donald N. Zwiep, who chairs the Planning Committee for the inaugural. "It will address the future direction of technological education as we move into the 21st century, with special emphasis placed on discussion of how best to prepare our graduates for careers in a rapidly changing workplace.
"We hope that the entire WPI community participates in the festivities," says Zwiep, who notes that a luncheon reception for the WPI community and invited guests will be held on the Quad following the inauguration. All classes will be canceled.
The last WPI inauguration was held on Charter Day, May 10, 1986, when Jon C. Strauss became president.
In addition to Zwiep, the Planning Committee includes John L. Heyl, vice president for university relations, Stephen J. Hebert '66, vice president for administration, Robert G. Dietrich, director of individual giving, Lisa C. Maizite, director of the Alumni Fund, Janet B. Richardson, associate vice president for student affairs, Bernard H. Brown, vice president for student affairs, and Linda C. Looft, director of special projects.
