Charles R. McNulty, 76, of Worcester, died May 10, 1996, in the Medical Center of Central Massachusetts-Memorial after an illness. He leaves his wife, Marianne C. (McQuade) McNulty, two sons, a daughter, four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
A well-known figure in local sports, McNulty coached baseball, basketball and football at WPI for many years. He joined the faculty in 1946 as a physical education instructor and athletic department coach, and was appointed assistant professor in 1952 and associate professor in 1957. Before that he was a physical education instructor and coach at LaSalle Institute in Troy, N.Y. He held a bachelor's degree from Manhattan College and a master's degree in education from Boston University.
McNulty was elected to the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1983, the year he retired from WPI. He was also a member of the Manhattan College Athletic Hall of Fame and a founding member of the Worcester College Basketball Coaches Association. He was a member of Skull, Phi Kappa Theta's Alumni Advisory Board, and Our Lady of the Rosary Church.
