Title	The effects of 5-azacytidine on transformed hairy root cultures of Artemisia annua

Abstract This MQP compared the effects that varying levels of 5-azacytidine had on growth and artemisinin levels in transformed hairy roots of Artemisia annua. Also compared was the difference in DNA methylation levels between shoots, roots and transformed roots. The intent of this project was to test the effects DNA methylation may play in slowing artemisinin production in older hairy root cultures of Artemisia annua by attempting to demethylate the DNA of older root cultures through the incorporation of 5-azacytidine. Although the results showed that 5-azacytidine is an inhibitor of growth in hairy roots of Artemisia annua, there was no apparent increase in artemisinin.
