The tourism industry is a significant contributor to Hong Kong's economy. Although tourism is important to Hong Kong, and English communication is necessary to the tourism industry, there is a very little linguistic research about tourism. The aim of this project is to collect descriptions and observe trends in English interactions within the tourism industry, to help fill this gap. Interactions that occurred naturally between tourists and tourism staff were recorded and rated on level of formality and English level. Results show that the price range of the hotels and the staff's position influenced the level of English spoken. By collecting information about interactions and analyzing them, a better understanding of English used in the tourism industry was gained.
