The anti-malarial drug, artemisinin, production can be maximized by ratooning, a cropping practice of reharvesting shoots 2-3 times from the same roots. This project showed that increasing the amount and type of nitrogen applied to plants increased artemisinin yields in subsequent ratoon crops. This is a low cost method for increasing yields of an important drug needed to treat malaria in developing countries.
