Multifunctional and multidentate ligands are essential starting materials in the design of metal organic frameworks that can exhibit structural and functional diversity. The ultimate goal of this work is to synthesize chiral multipyridyl ligands through template assisted solid state photoreactions. Specifically, this work explored the synthesis of 1-methyl-2,5-bis-, 1-chloro-2,5-bis-, 1,3,5-tris-, and 1-bromo-3,5-bis[4-pyridyl(ethenyl)] benzene (1-4) using traditional and microwave assisted reactions. The results from the methods are compared and the advantages of microwave assistance are discussed in the context of Heck couplings. Further, crystal structural analysis of some of the precursor pyridyl ligands and their complexation with templating resorcinol derivatives are discussed.
