The station 2.5 bleed in Pratt & Whitney turbofan engines is designed to ingest hail particles as they pass through the engine. To determine if the station 2.5 bleed is performing up to FAA standards, P&W conducts hail ingestion tests on a rig instead of full engines.
The purpose of this MQP is to assist P&W in better determining sensitivity of certain rig parameters to allow more optimal setting of those parameters within the rig. Fluent was used to compute the flow fields near the station 2.5 bleed for both engine and rig cases. A Matlab code was written to simulate the predicted trajectory of hail particles as they pass through these flow fields. The particle deflections were then compared in order to evaluate the performance of the test rig.
