The goal of this project was to determine how precisely temperature can be measured using rare-earth ion spectra, and to determine the Stark levels of the rare earth ion multiplets. The absorption spectra of Er-doped silicate glass were studied, and a method was developed to determine temperature change. Emission spectra were used and was calculated from the absorption spectrum by the McCumber method. An uncertainty in temperature of approximately 10K was obtained, and a simplified Stark level model was constructed.
