The objective of this research was to develop a methodology for the evaluation of acoustic responses of materials. A test set-up consisting of a solenoid hammer, microphone, and software to analyze sound response was used. Data were weighted to account for the sensitivity of the human ear and compared to an acoustically high hardened tool steel. Microstructural analyses were conducted to relate acoustic behavior to intrinsic material characteristics. The results were used to redesign an impact stop for noise reduction.
