Abstract Inadequate housing is a major problem in the City of Cape Town and the need increases every year. The goal of this project was to assist the Housing Directorate to build healthy communities by compiling and sharing lessons learned regarding low income housing practices and processes. Through case studies, interviews, and literature reviews we identified and investigated a set of five best practices to achieve our goal: community participation, green technology, mixed-use development, community facilities, and interdepartmental collaboration.
