Abstract Inadequate sanitation takes the lives of hundreds of residents in informal settlements every year in Cape Town, South Africa. Our initiative resulted in the development of a communal water facility that addresses issues pertaining to this matter. Through direct interaction with community members, city officials, and thorough field observation, a facility was designed to alleviate unhealthy living conditions through a peri-urban upgrading process that promotes cost effectiveness, sustainability, and ecologically friendly principles.
