Students Respond With Good Deeds

In this emotional time, WPI students have focused their efforts not only on their studies, but on reaching out to those affected by the tragedy. Below is a growing list of activities students have planned and executed in recent weeks.

Candlelight Vigil
On September 14th, the Student Government Association held a candlelight vigil, which was attended by over 500 members of the WPI community. Details and photos of the event are included in the Photo Album.

Card Night
Following the vigil in September 14th, the Social Committee supplied students with an opportunity to create special cards, sent to rescue workers at the site of the World Trade Center Bombing.

Islamic Education
In the days following the tragedy, the Muslim Students Association staffed a table in the Campus Center to educate students and other community members about Islam. They also released a statement regarding the terrorist attacks.

Fundraiser
From September 12-25, Dennis Mayo '03 and members of Phi Kappa Theta, Phi Gamma Delta, Phi Sigma Sigma, Alpha Gamma Delta, and Alpha Phi Omega held a fundraiser for victims of the attacks. Students staffing tables in the Campus Center and out on the Quadrangle during Homecoming raised $1500 for the Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Blood Drive
On September 18th, the Panhellenic Council sponsored a Blood Drive in Alden Memorial. Dozens of students made appointments and showed up to donate blood.

Teddy Bear Collection
The Panhellenic Council collected 90 teddy bears for children. When combined with those collected by residence hall students at the College of the Holy Cross, the teddy bears were sent with the help of Our Lady of the Lords Catholic School to the children of the Cantor-Fitzgerald Corporation that lost one or more parents in the World Trade Center Tragedy.

Benefit Concert
The Social Committee and Lens and Lights Club hosted a concert in the Campus Center on September 20th. Five bands appeared, helping the groups raise $700.00 for the WTC Relief Fund.
