Sustainability Management

Climate Protection
Global climate change can be attributed primarily to greenhouse gas emissions, which result from the burning of fossil fuels. WPI is committed to better understanding the significant social and environmental impacts of its energy consumption. To become more sustainable, the University seeks to reduce its dependence upon non-renewable energy sources and move towards utilization of renewable sources.

Materials Management

Members of the WPI community are responsible for participating fully in the ongoing efforts to make the University more sustainable by reducing the amount of trash and increasing the percentage of waste that is recycled. Our progress has been further encouraged by groups of students competing in Recyclemania!

Facilities

Worcester Polytechnic Institute strives to comply with all environmental laws and regulations while also incorporating the values of sustainability into the daily operation of the University. Through its operations, the University seeks to improve the quality and regenerative capacity of the local and global environmental, social, and economic systems that support the University's activities and needs. Towards this effort, it is critical to address pollution prevention, stewardship, and resource conservation activities and develop and promote practices that maximize beneficial effects and minimize harmful environmental effects of operations, research, and activities.

Social Sustainability

WPI is committed to working with its various communities, on and off-campus. From Worcester to Namibia, from Boston to Bangkok, through learning and research WPI students and faculty interact with urban and rural communities on sustainability issues that cut across the dimensions of environmental protection, economic prosperity and social equity. Through our campus activities, learning, and project center experiences we seek to ensure that all people in our local and global communities  are afforded justice and have the opportunity to achieve economic, environmental, and social well-being.
