Community Service Awards
At a ceremony on Monday, April 18, 2005, WPI's Community Service and Student Activities offices presented their annual awards for service to the WPI and local communities to 40 individual students and two student organizations.
Edwin B. Coghlin '23 Award for Community Service
Given annually to individuals or groups in recognition of valuable contributions made to the WPI and Worcester communities during the preceding academic year, the award honors extraordinary personal commitment beyond normal involvement in academic and extracurricular activities. It seeks to reward those who have, with a sense of determination and purposefulness, stepped forward as community leaders to the benefit of individuals, organizations, and society.
The award is presented in memory of Edwin B. Coghlin '23, the third of five members of his family who attended WPI over the course of four generations. As an active leader in the local United Way, the WPI Alumni Association, and the university's Worcester County Alumni Club, he distinguished himself through tireless leadership that benefited WPI and the greater Worcester community.
This year, the award was presented by Coghlin's son, Edwin (Ted) Coghlin Jr. '56, to
- Exploradreams: Once a week, WPI students, serving as Exploradreams mentors, work with young people from Friendly House as tutors, mentors, and ambassadors for WPI. They share their exceptional math and science skills, and also bond with these young students through recreational activities on the WPI campus.
- WPI Men's Basketball: In addition to excelling on the court, the team members reach out to the Worcester community through their work with the children of Friendly House and their service as Big Brothers through Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Worcester.
Crimson and Gray Award
The award recognizes students who have made significant contributions to the quality of life at WPI over an extended period of time and who have demonstrate outstanding leadership within the WPI community.
