Robbery -  On Thursday morning October 29, 2009 at approximately 3:00AM a WPI student was walking on campus by Alden Hall. He was approached by an unknown male, was punched in the face and his wallet containing $40 in cash along with ID's and credit cards were taken. The suspect was last seen fleeing in the direction of West Street toward Institute Road.

Suspect is described as follows:  Black Male, husky build, very tall wearing a brown hooded sweatshirt, dark clothing with 2-3 days growth facial hair.

B&E/Larceny from motor vehicles.  Between October 12, 2009 and October 14, 2009 there have been 2 B&E's into motor vehicles, 2 attempted B&E's into motor vehicles, and 1 larceny from a motor vehicle. Two were from the Higgins House lot, one from the exit road-Morgan, and two from peripheral streets.

Subject Description: Subject description in the Morgan service rd. break - Caucasian male, in his 30's wearing a baseball cap, patriots wind breaker, black pants and white sneakers.  Suspect was also identified as having a tattoo on his neck in the shape of a square.   Last seen entering into a 2003 Chevrolet Trailblazer MA Reg 2035RX color white.

WPI Police are working with the Leicester Police Department on the suspect follow-up.

Suspicious Person:  On Monday September 21, 2009 a student reports she had parked her vehicle on the service road at Salisbury Estates and was walking toward her apartment when she was approached by an individual riding on a bicycle.  The subject repeatedly asked her for a dollar while continuously following her on his bicycle. As the student hurried toward her apartment, the subject in a louder voice yelled expletives at the student.  WPI Police were notified and responded to the scene.

Investigation - WPI Police responding agency.  Patrols increased and Safety programs for Salisbury Estate students being offered by the WPI Police Community Service team.

Subject Described:  Hispanic male, high school age, long pony tail, wearing a red shirt with black spots, baggy dungaree shorts, riding a bicycle.

Armed Robbery:  On Friday September 18, 2009 a male student reports he was walking on Trowbridge Road when a white male wearing a brown and orange flannel shirt and jeans, approached him and demanded money.  According to the student, the suspect partially displayed what appeared to be a knife.  Money was handed over to the suspect, who then fled toward Highland Street. Once the student sought safety, both Worcester Police and WPI Police were notified.

Suspect:  White male, mid 40's, approximately 6ft tall, 190 pounds, brownish gray hair with a full beard.  He was wearing a brown and orange flannel shirt and jeans.

Assault and Battery– While preparing to conduct a building check, a WPI Police officer overheard arguing outside in the vicinity of West Street.  Upon further investigation the officer observed a female who was very distraught being restrained by a male and in need of immediate assistance. The officer initiated emergency response procedures and responded to the female’s aid and provided safekeeping. The male was then detained by the officer while appropriate back-up arrived on scene.  After a field interview was conducted it was learned that neither parties knew one another nor were they affiliated to WPI. 

The female indicated that she made a wrong turn onto West Street while operating her vehicle after noticing another vehicle following her at close range. At that point, she noticed the suspect’s vehicle also turn onto West Street and pull up alongside of hers.  Words were exchanged between the two parties and subsequently, the situation escalated to the end point of the officer’s arrival.

On Thursday February 19, 2009 A Professor from Atwater Kent reports 5 individuals within the building acting suspicious.

WPI Police respond to the scene and after preliminary inquiry and identification, WPI Police arrest all 5 subjects (Non-WPI Individuals) for incidents committed in both Atwater Kent and Alumni Gymnasium. Further investigation and collaboration with WPD is ongoing possibly linking these suspects to other crimes. Present charges include:

  • 3 Subjects charged with Trespassing
  • 1 Subject charged with Trespassing and Receiving Stolen Property
  • 1 Subject charged with Trespassing, Receiving Stolen Property and possession of Class D with intent to distribute within 1000’ of School zone.

When the suspect closed his distance to approximately (5) feet, she dropped her book bag and ran toward Riley Hall and notified WPI Police. No words were spoken. Upon the police retrieving her book bag an inventory was conducted by the student and a red Coach wristlet that contained approximately $10-$15 was reported missing.

Alleged Sexual Assault - On Saturday, November 15, 2008, WPI Campus Police engaged the Worcester Police Department in investigating a report of alleged sexual assault/rape that occurred in the early morning hours at 32 Dean Street, an off-campus location.

Open investigation - Worcester Police Department is the primary Investigating Agency.

WPI takes violence of any kind seriously, and WPI Campus Police are actively assisting the Worcester Police Department with this case. Because the investigation is on-going, there is no further information to disseminate at this time.

Break/Entering-Dwelling – On Sunday November 9, 2008 at approximately 10:22pm WPI Police were notified by the residents, (WPI Student’s) that their apartment located at 171 Highland Street had been broken into.  It was reported upon their return home the glass portion of the door was smashed, along with some vandalism within the apartment.  Items reported missing – camera, iPod and a laptop. 

Worcester Police responded and filed the necessary reports prior to WPI Police being notified.   Information was gathered by police after speaking with neighbors regarding a possible person of interest.

Current Status / Status of Investigation

Open investigation - Worcester Police Department primary Investigating Agency.

Person of Interest:  White Male approximately 5’10, wearing a dark blue hooded sweatshirt, reddish facial hair and between the ages of 18-22.  Suspect according to witnesses appeared intoxicated and spoke the name of Edith prior to proceeding to the second floor apartment.

Armed Robberies – Becker Campus Police inform the WPI Police on November 3rd via Safety Alert the following information:  On Saturday November 1st between the hours of midnight and 130am three armed robberies occurred in the Becker College vicinity.  In all three incidents a six inch knife was displayed.  In one incident a gun was also shown.

Suspects: Hispanic male operating a tan older model import vehicle 4 door sedan.  A second vehicle with two Hispanic female’s passengers in a gray or silver Ford Explorer with tinted windows.  The male was wearing a black jacket and multi-colored fitted baseball hat.  One of the females was wearing a yellow shirt.

Break/Entering into a Dwelling – At approximately 3:20am on Wednesday October 8, 2008 the rear door of a residential home was forced open.  The owners were within the house during the time of the break and the house was alarmed.  A two foot tall Tiffany lamp that was located just inside the rear door was taken.  Both WPD and WPI Police did a complete search of the area for suspects and evidence.

No one was hurt, no injuries reported.

Suspects:  No suspects were seen or observed, vehicle taillights were observed at a distance in the area.

Prevention Advice

Use a solid core or metal door for all entrance points.

Use a secondary blocking device on all sliding glass doors. Keep the latch mechanism in good condition and properly adjusted. Use anti-lift devices such as through-the-door pins or upper track screws.

Use interior light timers to establish a pattern of occupancy. Exterior lighting should allow 100- feet of visibility. Use good lighting along the pathway and at your door. Use light timers or photo-cells to turn on/off lights automatically. Use infra-red motion sensor lights on the rear of single family homes.

REMEMBER – Security Systems, alarms and other pro-active measures should be implemented as layers of protection.  Not any one measure can address and/or prevent the ill intent of an intruder.

Assault & Battery DW:  On Saturday October 4, 2008 at approximately 3:14am three males, later identified as WPI students were chased and assaulted with a crow bar/tire iron.  Two of students were transported to the hospital via UMass Ambulance.

Suspects Description:  4 White males, 1 male described as having a shaved head, another male having a nose ring, and the driver of the vehicle, curly hair wearing a hat with stripes.  No description on the fourth male at this time.

Vehicle Description: Possible Grey Taurus or an older model Green Honda with no front plates.  The vehicle was last seen traveling north on North Ashland Street towards Highland Street.

During the early morning hours on Sunday, September 21,2008, a Becker College student was stabbed to death and a second Becker student was slashed in the arm suffering a nonlife-threatening injury. According to the Worcester Telegram and Gazette, a fight broke out outside of an apartment located on North Ashland Street near Dix Street.The paper reported that there may have been uninvited guests at a party at this location prior to the incident which may have led to the fight and stabbing.
