Categorization of Web Pages

A consistent look and feel throughout a Website helps the visitor understand quickly how to access information on the site and how to find their way around within the site. In addition, a consistent look and feel reinforces the branding of an organization on a site. A consistent look and feel refers to use of font types, sizes and colors for headlines, etc. It does not mean every page on the Website must like every other page. The Web Committee has developed style requirements and guidelines for WPI's Web pages. Recognizing that no single style is appropriate for every Web page, the committee has established separate style elements for the following four categories, which encompass all of the pages on the WPI server:

University Pages

Certain pages within the WPI server have been designated University Pages because they contain official university documents or because of their importance in establishing an official, recognizable WPI presence on the Web. These pages are considered official publications of the university and must conform to the Style Elements for University Pages.

Departmental Pages

These are pages created for the purpose of representing a WPI academic or administrative department, office or program for the purpose of conveying information about the department, office or program. Such pages must follow the Style Elements for Departments.

Organizational Pages

These are pages created and maintained by groups of people, including research groups, recognized student organizations and chartered Greek organizations, committees, special interest groups, and other WPI-affiliated groups. Such pages must follow the Style Elements for Organizations.

Event & Publication Pages

These are pages created for one of the following purposes:

Such pages must follow the Style Elements for Events & Publications.

Personal Pages

These are pages created by individual faculty members, staff members and students for their personal use. Such pages are not hosted on the main university server, but rather on users.wpi.edu, and must follow the Style Elements for Personal Pages.
