Use of WPI's Initials and Full Name
Marketing research conducted over the years has indicated that WPI is not well known beyond central New England. We also know that our full name is not easy to remember or (in the case of our home city's name) easy to pronounce. For this reason, Worcester Polytechnic Institute has chosen to emphasize its initials in its corporate identity system, its advertising and its marketing materials. Over time, this institution would like to be identified by its initials, and for people to associate those three letters with a respected university that has a reputation for quality and innovation.
While the initials WPI will be emphasized, the full and legal name of the university remains Worcester Polytechnic Institute, and it is important that our external audiences are aware of that and come to know and remember our full name. Therefore, all marketing materials produced by the university should carry the full name, although its appearance should be subordinate to the identity marks that contain our initials.
Whenever possible, the full name should be conveyed by the use of the WPI Signature. The signature should always appear in the same visual space as the primary WPI identifier, the WPI Logo. In addition, it is good practice to spell out the full name, Worcester Polytechnic Institute, when the university is mentioned for the first time in text.
