WPI Engineers Without Borders: In the Field
The WPI student chapter of Engineers Without Borders was finally ready last July to head to Guatemala for the members' first assessment trip, after months of hard work and preparation. The group travelled to a small community in the heart of Guatemala, which is part of the municipality of San Cristobal, Alta Verapaz. They discovered that the biggest problems facing this small community were water quality & quantity and a healthier more efficient ways to cook. As the trip drew to an end, the group informally decided that the most sustainable water related solution would be to implement a rainwater harvesting project for each house. The group is currently in the process of developing designs for sustainable stoves while in the United States, and a plan on implementing a pilot project within the next year. If all goes according to plan, they will be able to start the pilot project in the community for both stoves and water by January 2012.
