Materials Management
Policy
Members of the WPI community are responsible for participating fully in the ongoing efforts to make the University more sustainable by reducing the amount of trash and increasing the percentage of waste that is recycled. Our progress in achieving these goals will be assessed in an annual report released by the President's Task Force on Sustainability.
Programs
To promote WPI's policy on responsible Materials Management, the University facilitates the recycling and safe disposal of many materials. This service is only available for materials generated through University-related activities.
| Targeted Materials | How to Prepare | Contaminants |
|---|---|---|
Mixed Paper
All clean and dry mixed paper can be deposited in paper recycling bins across campus. |
| Corrugated Cardboard | Cardboard can be left next to paper recycling bins (Do not put cardboard into these containers). |
Bottles & Cans
Rinse lightly. Crush to help save space. Acceptable materials can be brought to collection containers found in all academic and residential campus buildings. |
Mixed Electronics
Items can be brought to the Fuller Labs loading dock during normal business hours or a Facilities work order can be submitted. |
Consumer Hazardous Waste
Items should be brought to drop-off locations across campus |
| Chemical Waste | The Environmental and Occupational Safety Office should be contacted at x5216 for more information or to schedule a pick-up. |
If you have any questions or concerns about the disposal of any other materials, contact:
WPI Department of Facilities, +1-508-831-5500
WPI is committed to adopting new campus initiatives that will encourage and facilitate responsible materials management by members of the WPI community. The following programs have been implemented at WPI:
Bottle and Can Recycling:
This program, pioneered in March 2008, allows for the recycling of aluminum, glass and plastic returnable and non-returnable containers. Also included are plastic laundry detergent containers, and miscellaneous items derived from aluminum, glass or plastic. Not included will be plastic, paper, foam, or cardboard containers contaminated with food residue.
Green-top recycling containers for bottles & cans are located in the corridor of each residence hall on every floor and throughout the Campus Center. Residents of Fuller–Ellsworth Apartments should bring their bottles and cans to a green-top container located just inside the basement entrance to Daniels Hall. The Life Sciences & Bioengineering Center at Gateway Park has a container on each floor, and there will be at least one centrally-located recycling container in other buildings across campus, typically by the vending areas. Containers for bottles and cans will also be available for use during major events. More containers will be added in other areas, including at exterior locations around campus, as the volume of participation grows.
Data
A top priority of WPI's Sustainability Initiative is to reinvigorate the campus recycling program to encourage responsible materials management practices by all WPI community members. Annually, about 13% of the waste generated by the Institution is recycled. Efforts are continuously being made to increase the percentage of WPI's waste that is recycled each year. To make analysis of trends possible, all recycled materials have been classified into four categories: Mixed Paper, Corrugated Cardboard, Mixed Electronics, and Other (furniture, cans and bottles). The information presented below was taken from the WPI Solid Waste Tonnage data (resource only available to WPI community members) which was obtained from the IR Networks Annual Tonnage Report and the WPI Department of Facilities.
