Creating Assignments with the Self and Peer Assessment Tool

Why

The new Self and Peer Assessment tools help students to become more engaged in their own learning by reflecting on the quality of their work. With the Self Evaluation tool students use instructor establish criteria to review and grade their own assessments. Through Self Evaluation students learn to better understand their own strengths and weaknesses. With the Peer Assessment tool, students can review the work of others in the class. Instructor established criteria is used as a basis for student comments on their peer's assignments. Through Peer Assessment students learn to collaborate and provide constructive peer criticism.

With the Self and Peer Assessment Tool, assessments are created within a content area (such as Course Materials). Student Self and Peer Assessment Results can be monitored by going to Control Panel > Course Tools > Self and Peer Assessment.

Create an Assessment

  1. Click Edit Mode in the top right of your screen to access your site in Edit Mode.
  2. Enter the content area (such as "Assignments") that you wish to create the assessment within.
  3. Select Create Assessment > Self and Peer Assessment from the dropdown menu.
    The Self and Peer Assessment page appears.

Section 1: Create New or Import

  1. Select the New radio button to create a new Self and Peer Assessment or the Import radio button if you would like to reuse a saved Peer and Self Assessment.

  1. Click Browse to locate the file you want to attach.

Section 3: Assessment Information

  1. This section is optional. If desired, enter a name for the Assessment. If no name is entered, the assessment name in the imported file will be used. Additional assessment options can be modified after the assessment has been imported.

Section 4: Due Date

  1. Assign a due date for the assessment, which will automatically mark all submitted items beyond the chose date as late.

Section 5: Submit

  1. Click Submit to create the assessment.

Section 2: Assessment Information

  1. In the Name field, enter the name of the assessment.
  2. Type any instructions or notes into the Instructions box.
  3. In the Submission Dates field, select the date range for submission from the dropdown menus.

Section 3: Self and Peer Evaluation Options

  1. In the Evaluation Dates field, select the date range for Evaluation from the dropdown menus.
  2. If you want to allow students to submit anonymous evaluations, click Yes in the Allow Anonymous Evaluations field.
  3. If you want to allow students to assess their own work, click Yes in the Allow Self Evaluation field.
  4. If you want to allow students to view the results of their evaluation results, click Yes in the Show Evaluation Results to Submitter field.
  5. Enter the number of submissions each student is required to evaluate by entering a value in the Number of Submissions to Evaluate field. Self evaluations should not be included in this number. If the assessment is for self evaluation purposes only enter 0 in the Number of Submissions to Evaluate field.

Section 4: Due Date

  1. Assign a due date for the assessment, which will automatically mark all submitted items beyond the chose date as late.

Section 5: Options

  1. To make the assessment available immediately, click Yes in the Make the assessment available field.
  2. If you want to track student access to the assessment, click Yes in the Track number of views field.
  3. If you want the assessment available only for a specific time period, click the checkboxes for Display After and Display Until and select the appropriate dates from the dropdown menus.

Section 5: Submit

  1. Click Submit to finish creating the assessment. You will immediately be brought to the new Assessment's page in order to create questions.

After an assessment is created it appears in the content area with a link for students to view and complete the assessment.

You can now Edit the assessment to add questions and evaluation criteria.

A column is added to the Grade Center. You can view and download files, offer feedback to individual students, and post grades via the Grade Center. When you are ready to download the assignment files, refer to the Downloading Student Files from the Assignment Manager topic.

Adding Questions to your Assessment

  1. To add questions to your assessment, go to the Control Panel view or the Edit Mode view of the content area your assessment is located in.
  2. Click Edit in the dropdown next to the assessment you want to add questions to.
  3. Click Assessment Canvas to open the Assessment Canvas.
  1. Click the Create Question button.
  2. The Add Question screen appears in four sections.

Section 1: Assessment Information

  1. This section contains the Assessment name as it was given during the initial creation of the assessment.

Section 2: Question Information

  1. Enter the question in the Question Text field.

Section 3: Model Response

  1. If desired, enter a Model Response in the Model Response field.

Tip

The model response allows students to compare their work to an ideal response or set of criteria. This Response will only become available to evaluators during the evaluation period.

  1. Click Yes to make the Model Response Available to student evaluators during the defined evaluation period.

Section 4: Submit

  1. Click Submit to finish adding the question.

Adding Criteria to a question

  1. To add criteria to your assessment questions, go to the Edit Mode view of the content area your assessment is located in.
  2. Click Modify next to the assessment you want to add questions to.
  3. Click Assessment Canvas to open the Assessment Canvas.
  4. Click the Criteria option from the dropdown button next to the Question you would like to add criteria to.
  1. The Add/Edit Criteria screen appears.
  2. Click the Create Criteria button.
  3. The Add Criteria screen appears in two sections.

Section 1: Criteria Information

  1. Enter a description of the criteria in the Criteria Text field.
  2. Enter the number of points possible for successfully meeting this Criteria
  3. If partial credit is possible select the Partial Credit radio button in the Assign Points field. If no partial credit is available select All or Nothing.
  4. Click Yes to allow users to view feedback following an evaluation.

Section 2: Submit

  1. Click Submit to finish adding the criteria.

Reviewing Student Submissions and Evaluations

  1. Click on Control Panel > Self and Peer Assessment.
  1. Click the type of review from the dropdown button next to the question you would like to view.
