Release of Content Based on a Gradebook Item

Why?

The Gradebook Item option in the Adaptive Release feature of myWPI allows you to set the visibility of a particular piece of content based on a gradebook item. This tool can be used for presenting remedial content to students with lower scores on an assignment or exam, for providing bonus material to students with higher scores, or providing material only after a pre-test has been taken.

Setting up Your Content

Before the gradebook condition can be set, you need to first create your test, survey or gradebook item that will determine the criteria for your content, and then the content that will be viewed as a result of the criteria. In this example, a pre-test will be given before a lab to make sure the students are familiar with the lab equipment. If a student passes the pre-test, he or she will be given access to the lab instructions.

Tip

It is recommended that you start your content in the invisible state, and then make it visible again after setting the Gradebook Item rule.

Adding a Gradebook Item Criteria to your Content

  1. From the Control Panel, select the Manage button next to the item you wish to add the gradebook status to.

Note

When setting a Gradebook Item adaptive release rule, the rule is set on the content item and not on the gradebook item. This can be confusing at first. In this example, the visibility of the lab instructions is dependent on the score for the pre-test, so the rule is set on the item that contains the instructions.

  1. Select the Adaptive Release link
  1. In the first section labeled Date, select a date range if you also wish to restrict the content by date
  2. Skip the second section, Membership
  3. In the third section, Gradebook Item, select the quiz, survey or gradebook item that the content will be tied to. In this example, the gradebook item will be the pre-test.
  1. Select the criteria you wish to use. The options are Item has at least one attempt, score less than/greater than/equal to, or score between. In this example we will use a score of greater than or equal to 8 out of 10 points possible.

Score condition set as greater than or equal to 8 points

  1. Select the Submit button to finish. The content item is now marked Adaptive Release
  2. In this example, the test and content item need to be made visible to complete the process.

Student View of Adaptive Release Content

From the student view, the students will all see the pre-test. Once a student takes the pre-test, the content will only appear if he or she meets the criteria for the Gradebook item. In this example, the student needs to score 8 points or higher on the pre-test. Once this score is recorded, the content is revealed to the student.

  1. To find out which students have viewed the content, select the Manage button again from the Control Panel or Edit View and then go to the Adaptive Release and Review Status: User Progress link.
  1. The User Progress screen appears. In this example, the student with username train1 passed the pre-test and the lab instructions are visible as indicated by the open eye icon.
