Program of Study
Introduction:
The goals of the Doctoral and Masters degree programs are to give the student a broad background in a particular scientific area, a working knowledge of modern research tools, a strong appreciation for scientific research in theoretical and experimental areas, and a foundation for lifelong learning and experimenting, both individually and as part of a team. The Ph. D program is designed to provide a basis for careers not only in science, but also in diverse areas, such as management of technology, technical communication, secondary education, and medicine. The research-based program leading to the M.S. in Biotechnology specifically focuses on developing practical skills required for success in the vibrant Biotech industry. There is a low student-faculty ratio, ensuring that each student receives individual attention and advising; a unique program of research and course work offers flexibility to address the needs and goals of each student.
The most important requirement of the Ph.D. and M.S. programs is a research thesis or dissertation that applies the basic principles of biology and biotechnology to a specific research problem. Every graduate student is required to complete and defend a research thesis. With their broad knowledge of the field of biology and biotechnology and their detailed knowledge and applied research skills in their area of specialization, graduates are well prepared for employment in academics or industry or further graduate education.
