Art at Gateway

Celebrating Art at Gateway

The Art at Gateway competition was created to enhance the appearance of the Life Sciences & Bioengineering Center's lobby with artistic contributions that featured science within Gateway. The winning entries were unveiled on May 21, at a cocktail reception.  Provost John Orr and Vice President of Student Affairs and Campus Life, Janet Richardson, were among those who attended.  The reception gave many members of the community an opportunity to socialize and congratulate the winners.

First Place:  The Universe Within, by Piyali Mazumdar
The painting was done on a stretched 11x15 canvas with acrylic paints. The inspiration comes from a photograph of the microscopic view of a stem cell. The brilliant colors in the photograph were astonishing to the eye and seemed perfect to put down on my canvas.  This work took 10-15 hours to complete.

Second Place: E. coli Valentine, by Yatao Liu and Terri Camesano
Atomic force microscopy image of two E. coli bacteria on a glass slide.  The image was captured using a Veeco Dimension 3100.

Third Place (tie):  Finding the Right Path, by Edith Plada and Joe Duffy
Axonal tracts of central and peripheral nervous system of a Drosophila melanogaster embryo fluorescently labelled  for Fasciclin II.  Image captured by ApoTome processing on a Zeiss AxioImager.

Third Place (tie):  Filamentation of the human pathogenic fungus Candida albicans, by Reeta Prusty Rao
My lab is studying the role of secondary metabolite signaling in the context of fungal pathogenesis.  Indole acetic acid (IAA) is a secondary metabolite that enhances filamentation (and hence pathogenicity) in fungi.  The picture shows a mutant version of the human pathogenic fungus  C. albicans that generally does not filament but does so in the presence of IAA.  Disrupting the IAA-mediated chemical communication between fungi might abrogate the pathogenic process.

Congratulations to all who particpated.  The winning entries are pictured below in the order listed above.
