Music
Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) is well-suited for education and research in music and technology. The emphasis on humanities, as an integral component of the curriculum, is central to the educational philosophy of WPI. The commitment to the arts is exemplified in over 100 musical performances yearly by 13 music ensembles. These performances occur not only on the campus, but have included tours in New England, the United States, Western and Eastern Europe, and Africa.
The music faculty is keenly aware of the importance of the arts and humanities in the academic and personal lives of WPI students. To this end, the music department is host to a Visiting Lecture series in Music and Technology, has established off-campus project opportunities with radio, television, and entertainment organizations, and offers an active and rich musical environment in the newly renovated Center for the Performing Arts in Alden Memorial.
