Tuesday, March 27, 2007

2:00 to 4:00 PM, Campus Center - Hagglund Room

This informative discussion of primary issues surrounding compliance with patent law and the WPI Intellectual Property policy, led by Dr. Michael Manning, WPI's Director of Technology Transfer, will provide attendees with information needed to obtain assistance in recognizing when inventions occur, how to make appropriate disclosure, and how to protect proprietary information. In addition, three experienced patent attorneys from Burns & Levinson LLP will be providing attendees with an overview of intellectual property as well as details with respect to patent claim construction and various aspects of protecting chemical/biotechnology inventions. Jacob N.(Jesse) Erlich, Esq. a partner at Burns and Levinson and a WPI graduate, will be presenting an overview of the various forms of intellectual property: trade secrets, patents, copyrights and trademarks. The presentation will focus on a comparison of these various forms of intellectual property protection and which form of intellectual property protection is best suited for an inventor and the university. Dr. Orlando Lopez, Esq., also a partner, will be presenting an analysis of patent claims and providing the inventor with suggestions on how to read and understand claims. Dr. Janine Susan, Esq., who specializes in chemical and biotechnology inventions, will be providing inventors with a better understanding of how to protect chemical/biotechnology inventions.
