Prototyping

Prototyping is one of the stages in new product development before final product design. Creating a tangible prototype is an important step in the proof of concept. WPI's Haas Technical Education Center makes available machinery and instruction to help users achieve self sufficiency in CNC tools and technologies, so they can conceive, design, and create their own CNC machined parts. WPI offers four Accelerated CNC Machining Courses. The accelerated courses give participants an opportunity to go from a CAD design to CAM software to a finished part within a few hours. For information on accelerated courses, please contact Toby Bergstrom, torbjorn@wpi.edu, or +1-508-831-5122 or visit the Haas Technical Education Center or click on Accelerated CNC Machining @ WPI.

Haas Automation, Inc. has entrusted WPI with over a quarter million dollars in new machine tools, software and training. The eight new CNC machine tools are used in ME 1800, ME 3820, and ES 3323, as well as other courses. The machine tools facilitate the realization, or fabrication, of parts that students have designed on computers. The machine tools are important for supporting WPI's project based-education and are also used in manufacturing engineering research, as well as to produce apparatus to support research efforts in other fields.
