Inventor Notebooks

Inventor Notebooks are used by researchers and inventors to document progress of an invention or research that may lead to intellectual property. The importance of the Inventor Notebook is recognized when it becomes key legal documentation in the event that patent litigation arises concerning your invention. Keeping entries in the notebook to acceptable legal standards is of utmost importance in defending a patent application. The CEI will provide links to other web sites with helpful information and a PowerPoint presentation by alumna, Jennifer E. LaCroix, Esq., '97, of McAndrews, Held & Malloy Ltd. in Chicago, IL. (LaCroix presented a session on Lab Notebook Procedure at CEO East, WPI's annual collegiate entrepreneurship conference), in March, 2005.

There are many important facets to inventor notebooks, but being permanently bound with consecutively numbered pages and space at the bottom of the page for witness signatures is one of the most important. This web page will provide more information like this when completed. In the meantime, please refer to the links to other sites before starting a notebook. Inventor Notebooks are available for purchase in the Campus Center bookstore or on the Internet. Inventor Notebook workshops will be held once per term on proper procedures for keeping a notebook. Please check the CEI calendar for an upcoming workshop.
