The Thirteenth Annual Invitational Mathematics Meet
More than 300 high school students from 83 high schools in four states participated in the Thirteenth Annual Invitational Mathematics Meet, held on the WPI campus on October 26 under the direction of John Goulet. Students competed first as individuals and then as teams, answering challenging questions in secondary-level pre-calculus mathematics. The first-place individual winner was David Greenspan of Lexington High School. The second- and third-place individual winners were Warren Schudy of Massachusetts Academy of Mathematics and Science, located on the WPI campus, and Dong Wook Kim of Kent School. Lexington High School also took top honors in the team competition; team members Aaron Iba, David Greenspan, Mark Lipson, Liz Marcil, and Jacqueline Ou are shown at right with team adviser Saleh Rahman and John Goulet. The second-place team was Kent School, with team members Christine DeGennaro, Hubert Chau, Tonkid Chantrasmi, and Dong Wook Kim and adviser Ben Nadire. Third place team honors went to the Massachusetts Academy of Mathematics and Science, with team members Warren Schudy, Dan Corson, Matt Weber, and Dan Beauregard and adviser Jon Bartelson.
In addition to the student competition, a colloquium was held for faculty advisers entitled "Industrial Projects in Mathematics: Results, Experiences, and Further Opportunities," given by Arthur Heinricher, and advisers and students attended a panel discussion on career opportunities in mathematics featuring four WPI alumni, Martin Couture of Premier Insurance, Lucia Kimball of Bentley College, Amy A. Smith Remillard of Sepracor Inc., and Michael Tocci of The Mathworks. WPI funding for the event was supplemented by generous contributions from Neles-Jamesbury, Norton Company, Inc., Rosenlund Travel Service, Tatnuck Booksellers, Texas Instruments, and the Wyman-Gordon Foundation.
Math in Industry Workshop for High School Teachers
A Mathematics in Industry Workshop for High School Teachers was held on campus June 26-30, 2000 under the auspices of the Center for Industrial Mathematics and Statistics (CIMS). The workshop was designed to bring the excitement of industrial mathematics into the high school classroom. Participants worked on mathematics and statistics projects developed in WPI's industrial mathematics program and developed "mini-projects" accessible to high school students that illustrate ways in which mathematics and statistics are used in business and industry. They also discussed current and future applications of mathematics, curricular changes in high schools and colleges, and the many career paths open to students well-trained in mathematics. Particular program highlights included a number of talks by experts from universities, business, and industry; a panel discussion with mathematicians working in industry; and a field trip to United Technologies Research Center and Pratt & Whitney. The workshop was sponsored by WPI and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) through funding provided by the National Science Foundation.
