Combined B.S./M.S. Program

Outstanding undergraduate Mathematical Sciences majors can plan a carefully constructed program that enables them to earn graduate credit during their senior year toward a Master's Degree in Applied Mathematics or Applied Statistics. This program operates under the general guidelines for B.S./M.S. programs in the WPI graduate catalog.

Students interested in this program should consult both their academic advisors and a member of the Mathematical Sciences Department Graduate Committee early in their undergraduate career.

Students must apply for admission to the combined B.S./M.S. program during their junior year so that their planned program can be approved before the beginning of their senior year by both their academic advisors and the Mathematical Sciences Department Graduate Committee.

A Five Year Program in Industrial & Financial Mathematics

A five-year bachelor's and master's program has been developed for students interested in mathematical sciences. An admitted student receives admission to both a bachelor's program in mathematics or a related field, and to a Professional Master of Science degree program in either Industrial or Financial Mathematics.

Application to this program is indicated on the freshman admission application form. By selecting this option on the form, applicants are automatically considered for the five year program. A student accepted as a freshman to WPI may or may not also receive admission to the program. Positions in the program are limited and selection is based on academic merit. If admitted to this program, all students are expected to maintain a strong average and will be reviewed after C-term of the junior year.

As either a junior or a senior, students in the program are required to work as a Peer Learning Assistant for one academic year. The PLA assists professors with preparing assignments, conducting conference and homework sessions, grading and other related tasks.

Students in this five year program that are in good academic standing, have successfully completed their B.S. degree and a year as a PLA, will be awarded a partial teaching assistantship for the fifth/graduate year. The position requires a 10 hour a week work commitment and is compensated by free tuition for the graduate year.
