Projects & Publications
- Mitigation Banking
- Environmental mitigation banking, also sometimes called conservation banking, has recently been suggested as an institutional innovation that allows banking of environmental restorations to offset environmental damage caused by development projects so net change in environmental resources remains zero and strong sustainability criteria are met.
- Decentralization of Electric Power Generation
- Can electric power generation and distribution system be decentralized in a way that makes economic sense? What are the implications of decentralization for reliability and how can the transition to a decentralized system be managed? These are the questions addressed by this multidisciplinary project that encompasses both engineering and economic domains.
- Global Political Order
- This project examines challenges that a superpower faces while maintaining its position in the global economic system. The effects on aggregate welfare of the population at home and abroad, as well as issues of sustaining authority in the long run are explored through experimentation with a computer model.
- Peer-to-Peer File Sharing Networks
- Peer-to-peer technology has made massive unsanctioned music exchange possible. Record labels have responded to the emergence of online music networks with litigation and are also considering self-help measures. We conduct an institutional analysis of the music industry in transition and build a formal resource-based model of a representative online music network. In a series of experiments that emulate the offensive against music networks we show that a peer-to-peer system may be quite resilient to outside disturbances.
- Unsolicited Comercial Email
- The growth of unsolicited commercial email imposes increasing costs on organizations and causes considerable aggravation on the part of email recipients. Regulation and various economic and technical means are in the works - all aimed at bringing down the flood of unwanted commercial email. This project contributes to our understanding of the phenomenon of spam.
- Economics of Telecommunications Networks
- This project examines economics and adoption of telecommunication technologies, such as next generation cellular and satellite networks and WiFi. We also compare strategies for network deployment.
