As an interdisciplinary program, Robotics Engineering draws on people and resources from a variety of different places on campus. Our Faculty & Staff have broad interest areas and expertise and are drawn from Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Computer Science. Our advisory board guides the development of curriculum and the direction of this new program, while faculty & staff coordinate and work on committees to build a sustainable program.
Below we highlight several of our hard-working, passionate, and award-winning Robotics Engineering students who are at the heart of the continuing and growing success of the degree!
Outstanding Senior 2011 - Felipe Polido
Felipe Polido is originally from Brazil, where he developed a longstanding passion for robotics and rock climbing. His decision to seek an education in WPI’s newly-stated Robotics Program has proved to be, without a doubt, an excellent choice. Currently he is keenly pursuing a double major of Robotics Engineering as well as Electrical & Computer Engineering.
“I am excited and proud to be part of the Robotics Program at WPI. The project-based curriculum taught me invaluable group skills. I found both students and professors to be very dedicated to the projects, creating a strong and self-supporting community.
The robotics unified courses tightly intertwine mechanical, electrical and computer science components; while the extensive scope of materials covered gave me a solid robotics background, the fast paced curriculum gave me the poise necessary to learn new skills on the fly”.
Outstanding Senior 2010 - Dan Earley
Dan Earley grew up in Worcester, MA. From an early age, he had an interest in engineering and understanding how things in the world around him worked. After studying electrical engineering at another local university, Dan transferred to the Robotics Engineering Program at WPI. The newly formed, multidisciplinary major allowed him to gain knowledge and hands-on experience in many of the fields of engineering that interested him.
"The Robotics Engineering curriculum at WPI is very challenging and unique. I have had the opportunity to take courses from a variety of engineering disciplines in order to build a versatile set of skills. The project-based program at WPI has given me the invaluable experience of working on small engineering teams to complete real-world tasks. I am confident that the knowledge I have gained from the Robotics Engineering Program and its dedicated faculty and staff will prove to be advantageous as I advance my career."
Outstanding Junior 2010 - Mark Hawthorne
Mark Hawthorne grew up in Budd Lake, New Jersey, where his coursework and involvement in MORT, his high school's FIRST robotics team, began to steer his interests towards robotics. This led Mark to enroll at WPI, in pursuit of participating in the robotics engineering and computer science programs. Completing the bulk of the robotics curriculum early on in his WPI career, Mark has become a Student Assistant for the department and has seen the position as an opportunity to both retain his knowledge and to help other students perform their best.
"The RBE program at WPI challenged me to become a better student, especially in respect to working with groups under conditions that will be akin to the working world. Even though I completed the majority of my robotics coursework as a Sophomore, as a Student Assistant I have had the opportunity to give back to the RBE Department. From areas such as helping students with their labs to working with professors to implement tweaks and changes to the coursework, I have seen constant improvements and refining to the curriculum and cannot wait to see how WPI's Robotics Engineering program will grow in the future"
