Many new breakthroughs in medicine begin as new discoveries in university laboratories. BEI seeks to identify emerging technologies and nurture them to the point where commercialization can commence.

Since 2002, the investigators working through the BEI have been awarded more than $20 million in funding for projects as diverse as remote medical sensors, next-generation prosthetics, biomaterials for tissue scaffolds and advanced surface chemistry for label-free diagnostic devices. The common theme in all this work is that it leverages extant WPI faculty expertise to rapidly commercialize new products that meet important needs.

As the Bioengineering Institute has grown and matured, ongoing programs have coalesced around three general platforms for research and product development—they are bioengineered materials, tissue regeneration, sensors and imaging.
