Research Programs
Research within the Materials Resource Recovery and Recycling I/UCRC will build the basic science, generic solution strategies, and precompetitive, innovative recovery and recycling technologies for a broad spectrum of industries, products, and materials.
Although the starting WPI research portfolio will be defined collaboratively with industrial participants during the ongoing planning grant, candidate projects will include the following topics in addition to those proposed by industrial members:
- Develop novel sensor techniques to identify and classify materials within the waste stream;
- Establish innovative strategies and technologies to extract and sort metal scrap;
- Refine x-ray fluorescence techniques to determine the composition of molten metal;
- Develop an automatic compositional control system for a melting furnance that uses scrap aluminum input feedstock;
- Establish a methodology to include recovery and recyclability considerations within the alloy design process.
