ACRC Announces Merton C. Flemings and Ray H. Witt Awardees

The Advanced Casting Research Center (ACRC) of the Metal Processing Institute (MPI) is pleased to announce the winners of the Mert Flemings and Ray H. Witt Awards for 2001.

Each year the ACRC recognizes two individuals who have made significant contributions to the industry.

The Merton C. Flemings Award, established in 1991, is given to an individual who significantly contributed to our understanding of solidification processing fundamentals which have been applied commercially in the foundry industry. This year's recipient is Dr. Raymond Donahue, Senior Director, Advanced Materials and Foundry Technology at Mercury Marine. Raymond J. (Ray) Donahue is recognized as one of the U. S. casting industry's strongest supporters of technical advancement through his active leadership roles on the DOE's former Advisory Board and current Industrial Oversight Panel, AFS's Research Board and our own ACRC Steering Committee. From a personal R&D perspective, Ray's in-depth understanding of the unique problems associated with casting copper-bearing hypereutectic Al-Si alloys in sand molds combined with his unwavering belief that such alloys and processeswere needed to improve future engine performance, lead him to solutions that have made possible what will likely prove to be his legacy; Lost Foam cast hypereutectic alloy high performance Mercury Marine engines.

The Ray H. Witt Award, established in 1999, is given to an individual for his/her leadership in the aluminum casting industry, for investing resources to broaden the technology base; for introducing advanced concepts and techniques; for encouraging the education and training of new talent and for inspiring others to advance the industry through technical achievement. This year the award will be given to Dr. Gary Ruff, Intermet, Executive Vice President of Technical Services at INTERMET Corporation in Troy, Michigan. He is responsible for product, process, and materials engineering, as well as research and development at INTERMET.

Both Donahue and Ruff will receive their awards at the ACRC Spring Meeting on May 15th.
