Dr. Rathindra "Babu" DasGupta Selected as ASM-Indian Institute of Metals Lecturer

We are pleased to announce that one of our members, Dr. Babu DasGupta of SPX Contech, has been selected as the ASM-IIM Lecturer for 2000. He will be carrying out his responsibilities as ASM-IIM lecturer during the first weeks of October 2000.

Dr. DasGupta will be presenting a series of lectures on the topics of squeeze casting and semi-solid processing of aluminum alloys for automotive applications. He will be speaking at the Bangalore Chapter, at the Mumbai Chapter and the Pune Chapter on the topic of: "Use of 'High Integrity' Die Casting Processes in the Automotive Industry". This presentation provides a description of commercially available "high integrity" die casting processes for manufacturing automotive components. These processes include squeeze casting (high pressure, controlled cavity fill rate), semi-solid metal casting, and VacuralTM (a variation of the conventional high pressure, high velocity die casting process). The various automotive products made using these casting techniques are also reported in this presentation. Finally, the mechanical (tensile, impact, fatigue strength and fracture toughness) and wear properties are compared among the above processes. In this presentation, attempts have also been made to compare property data and microstructures of traditional casting processes (gravity permanent mold, sand castings) with those of the "high integrity" die casting processes.
