Tom Prucha to Receive 2003 AFS Award of Scientific Merit

Des Plaines, Illinois - In anticipation of the 107th Casting Congress, April 26-29, in Milwaukee, the American Foundry Society (AFS) has announced the recipients of the 2003 AFS Awards of Scientific Merit and Service Citations.
The recipients of the 2003 Awards of Scientific Merit are:
- George M. Goodrich, president, Professional Metallurgical Services, "for untiring efforts to improve the metalcasting process through ferrous metals research, technology transfer and sharing his vast knowledge of the metalcasting process."
- Thomas Piwonka, director metalcasting technology center (retired), Univ. of Alabama-Tuscaloosa, "for extensive contributions in the form of fundamental research and transfer of technology regarding molding sand, steel technologies, investment casting and thin walled iron castings."
- Thomas E. Prucha, vice president-technical services, Intermet Corp., "for extensive contribution to process development, metal properties, computer-aided engineering and non-destructive evaluation for aluminum and iron castings."
The recipients of the 2003 Service Citations are:
- Nino V. Davi, vice president (retired), Pacific Steel Casting Co., "for over 50 years of leadership, service and support for the American Foundry Society and the Northern California chapter."
- John V. Grabel, senior process engineering supervisor, Caterpillar, Inc., "for involvement as founding chairman of Bradley University's FEF student chapter and his dedication to the next generation of metalcasters as well as his active participation on the Cast Iron and Engineering Divisions of the American Foundry Society."
- Frederick P. Schleg, director of education (retired), Cast Metals Institute, "for lifelong dedication to helping others learn the metalcasting process demonstrated by his untiring course instruction, writings and leadership in the development of the Cast Metals Institute."
- Alan K. Steffe, manufacturing engineering director-castings, General Motors Powertrain, "for promoting excellence in managerial and technical leadership in the metalcasting industry including high volume lost foam casting processes for automotive aluminum castings."
- Joseph R. Ward, metallurgist, Indianapolis Casting Corp., International Truck & Engine Corp., "for numerous contributions made through active and dedicated service to the technical committees of the American Foundry Society and for technical developments in metals and green sand technologies."
The AFS Board of Awards makes its selection for the Awards of Scientific Merit and Service Citations based on nominations from the metalcasting industry. The awards will be presented at the 107th Casting Congress President's Luncheon & Annual Business Meeting.
