Programs marked with an asterisk* require the interested party to submit an application, and in some cases, other documentation.  Submission of an application does not represent acceptance.  Applicants will be notified of their status of acceptance.

Registration for programs that do not require an application is offered on a first come/first served basis. Both registration and payment are required for the participant to be enrolled in these programs.

EMERGING FILMMAKERS*

Write, create, act and direct a short film!  In this week-long residential program at WPI, you will learn how to write a script and to stage, shoot, and edit your own short narrative film (digital video format).  Students will be challenged to “think outside the box” of mainstream Hollywood cinema by having to follow the guidelines of the Dogma 95 Film Manifesto, which emphasizes natural lighting, shooting on location, found props, and unconventional stories. At week end, WPI will host a film premier to showcase your finished work. This program will be taught by Dr. John Sanbonmatsu, a WPI faculty member who is a philosophy professor and independent filmmaker.  Application Deadline:  May 15, 2012

FRONTIERS*

Entering its 29th year, this residential, research and learning experience will challenge soon-to-be high school juniors and seniors to explore the outer limits of science, mathematics, and engineering using state-of-the-art technology. In Frontiers session I, students will focus on Science, Technology, Engineering or Math (STEM) challenges and projects in aerospace engineering, biology/biotechnology, biomedical engineering, chemistry/biochemistry, civil and environmental engineering, computer science, electrical and computer engineering, environmental and sustainability studies, interactive media and game development, mathematics, mechanical engineering, or physics. To complement the academic program, each student will also enroll in a humanities and arts workshop, such as writing, art, music, speech, history, international studies, law, or theatre. In Session II, participants will immerse themselves in robotics or global sustainability.  Participants may also elect to attend both sessions!

Applications deadline is April 30*, 2012.

Frontiers I:  July 8-20, 2012 

Frontiers II: July 22–31, 2012

Audience: Entering grades 11-12 in fall 2012

Cost: $2295 for Frontiers I, $1750 for Frontiers II, and $3750 for both Frontiers I and II

   

INTRODUCTION TO ENGINEERING SOFTWARE

This program is focused on the use of engineering software to understand and explore the world. You will gain experience with programming and data analysis using MATLAB, Mathcad and LabVIEW.  Examples covered include stand textbook problems, RGB color model, fractals, analyzing medical data (ECG) and applications of the concepts of randomness and synchronization.  The program will meeting from 9am-3pm. 

Program dates: July 9–13, 2012

Audience: Entering grades 10-12 in fall 2012

Cost: $495

 

LAUNCH 

This non- residential learning and research opportunity is for students entering freshman and sophomore years of high school. You'll spend your days working with faculty focusing on current problems and challenges in the fields of biology, chemistry/biochemistry, computer science, interactive media and game development, or robotics. At Launch, you will attend workshops and perform lab work in your chosen field of study. With faculty, current WPI students, and classmates, you will use state-of-the-art experimental, analytical, and computer technology to complete projects and assemble your findings.

Registration begins February 15, 2012 and will remain open until program is filled.

August 6-10, 9am–4pm

Audience: entering grades 9–10

 

LEADERSHIP ACADEMY FOR YOUNG WOMEN*

What do windshield wipers, Kevlar® and fire escapes have in common? They were all invented by women! At this week long residential program, participants will build creativity and confidence. Learn leadership, presentation skills, project management and work in teams in a variety of themed days. Meet leading women executives in lunchtime forums.  The curriculum has been designed to provide a unique, hands-on learning experience and will be taught by WPI faculty and students.  Deadline: Application May 15*, 2012 

Program dates: July 22-28, 2012

Audience: Girls, entering grades 8-10 in fall 2012

SPORTS CAMPS AND CLINICS

Join us for our 36th year of Summer Sports Camps!      

This summer WPI will offer sports camps for boys and girls ages 7-18 depending on the camp. Programs will be offered June - August and will feature basketball, rowing, soccer and baseball. Come to WPI to learn new skills, enhance your athletic abilities, meet new friends and have fun!  

You will work in small groups getting expert coaching from WPI's Youth Coaches.

WPI ADVANCED MATHEMATICS PROGRAM*       

In a day program for students talented in mathematical science, you will explore new concepts and challenge yourself with new applications. Sessions include combinatorics, basic probability, algebra, geometry, and more.

Application Deadline: Application AND letter of recommendation from the student’s math teacher are due by May 30.* Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Early application is encouraged.

Program dates: July 16–20, 2012, 9am–4pm

Cost: $495

Audience: Entering grades 7–9
