Middle School Students

WPI is dedicated to making a child's experience the best it can be. We know that parents have questions, and we have done our best to address them. If you still have questions after checking out Parent's Page please contact the Summer Office at 508-831-4900.

Programs marked with an asterisk* require the interested party to submit an application, and in some cases, other documentation. Submission of an application does not represent acceptance.  Applicants will be notified of their status of acceptance. When applying for a Middle School program, please use school code 99999 if prompted for a school or high school code.

Registration for programs that do not require an application is offered on a first come/first served basis.  Both registration and payment are required for the participant to be enrolled in these programs.

ADVANCED MATHEMATICS PROGRAM*

In a day program for students talented in mathematical science, you will explore new concepts and challenge yourself with new applications. Sessions include combinatorics, basic probability, algebra, geometry, and more. This is a day program offered between 9am-4pm.

Application Deadline: Application AND letter of recommendation from the student’s math teacher are due by May 30.* Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. Early application is encouraged.

Program dates: July 16–20, 2012, 9am–4pm

Cost: $495

Audience: Entering grades 7–9

 

EXXONMOBIL BERNARD HARRIS SUMMER SCIENCE CAMP

The Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp is awarded to select universities each year through grants from ExxonMobil. WPI has applied for this grant for Summer 2012, but recipients of the 2012 grant will not be announced until later this spring. To see details from last year's program, click here.

 

CAMP REACH*

A recipient of the Presidential Award for Excellence in STEM Mentoring, Camp Reach a residential program, brings together a group of inquisitive girls the summer before their seventh-grade year, empowering them with two weeks of discovery and hands-on engineering to change the way the world works.  Emphasizing the social context of engineering design—the girls work in teams with a community “customer” to create a plan for solving a real problem—Camp Reach keeps the connection with these girls by offering follow-up activities through high school.

CRIME SCENE SCIENCE

Learn the science behind crime scene investigations. Process evidence from the crime scenes, interview witnesses/suspects, use software to create composite pictures, learn to lift fingerprints, examine trace evidence under the microscope and more. Participants will be assigned one of the three ‘crimes’ to ‘process.’ The group will learn the techniques together and use them to process evidence from their own ‘crime scenes.’  This is a day program offered between 9am-4pm.

Program dates: July 23 - 27, 2012 

Audience:  Entering grades 6-8 in fall 2012

INTELLECT QUEST

A Summer Program for kids who need an Intellectual Challenge!

Intellect Quest is a fun and challenging program designed to stimulate the inquisitive minds of bright, motivated students.  Designed for students (grades 5-8) throughout the area, this experience requires cooperation, organization, and innovation.

Under the supervision or our summer director and alongside Mass Academy students, participants work in a hands-on environment within the disciplines of math, science, and technology.

Division 2:  July 16 - 20, 2012  Must be entering 5 or 6 grade as of September 2012

LEADERSHIP ACADEMY FOR YOUNG WOMEN*

What do windshield wipers, Kevlar®, and fire escapes have in common? They were all invented by women! At this weeklong residential program, participants build creativity and confidence. You will learn leadership, presentations skills, and project management while working in teams in a variety of themed days. And you’ll meet leading women executives during the program. The curriculum has been designed to provide a unique, hands-on learning experience and is taught by WPI faculty and students.

Audience: Girls entering grades 8-10 in fall 2012

ROBOTICS: ADVANCED ROBOTICS*

Already know the basics and ready for a challenge? Use your knowledge of the LEGO® MINDSTORMS® platform to take it to the next level. At this week-long residential program, you will work with WPI faculty and robotics students exploring the next level of robotic construction, programming and competition.   

Program dates: July 29–August 3, 2012 

Audience: Entering grades 6–8 in fall 2012

Cost: $795

 

ROBOTICS: JUNIOR ROBOTICS CHALLENGE

This weeklong day program designed to inspire and excite its participants as they explore science and engineering in a fun and inventive atmosphere. It teaches the basics of designing, building and programming autonomous robots using the LEGO® MINDSTORMS™ platform. The student-designed robots then face-off in a friendly competition on the final day to demonstrate what was learned during the week. This is a day program offered between 9am-4pm.

Program dates: July 9-13, 2012 for kids entering grades 4-6 in fall 2012

SPORTS CAMPS

Join us for our 36th year of Summer Sports Camps!      

This summer WPI will offer sports camps for boys and girls ages 7-18 depending on the camp. Programs will be offered July and August and will feature basketball, rowing, soccer and baseball. Come to WPI to learn new skills, enhance your athletic abilities, meet new friends and have fun! These day camps are offered between 9am-4pm.  

You will work in small groups getting expert coaching from WPI's Youth Coaches.

WOMEN IN SCIENCE

Ever wonder where science can take you? Science is the foundation of so many fields from Veterinary medicine, to chemistry to national intelligence. This week long program is designed for girls entering grades 5-7 and will provide a survey of many applications of science. Each day there will be 4 science based workshops, teambuilding activities and games. Girls will be placed in groups of 10 and rotate throughout the workshops each day. Teambuilding activities will include the entire group. This is a day program offered between 9am-4pm.
