Worcester in the Summer
Founded in Worcester, Mass., in 1865, WPI is the nation's third-oldest private college of engineering and science in the United States and was one of the nation's earliest technological universities. WPI is set on an 80-acre hilltop campus situated in a residential section of Worcester, MA, a city of 170,000. The city, the second largest in the six-state region, has many colleges and an unusual variety of cultural opportunities. Located three blocks from the campus, is the nationally famous Worcester Art Museum, which is the second largest in New England, and the world-renowned American Antiquarian Society are both adjacent to WPI. Also nearby is the historic Higgins Armory Museum. The Worcester Historical Museum and the EcoTarium. The city is home to resident theater companies, a symphony orchestra, several excellent choruses and the nation's oldest musical festival. Residents enjoy concerts performed by internationally recognized artists in the beautifully restored Mechanics Hall. one of the finest concert halls in the United States, and the DCU Centre, a 15,000-seat arena and conference center that hosts a variety of entertainment events such as rock concerts, semiprofessional athletic events and conferences. For recreation there is Boston, Providence, Cape Cod, or Hartford all within driving distance. You could visit some of the top beaches in Massachusetts or several of the major metropolitan areas featuring world-class museums, historical sites, recreational facilities. concert halls and professional sports teams. A bit farther are the White Mountains of New Hampshire to the north and the Berkshires to the west, Cape Cod to the South and Rockport to the East.
Worcester is a vibrant, dynamic metropolis. During the summer you can make the most of the warm weather, taking advantage of the city’s wide variety of outdoor activities, and rich cultural attractions, neighborhood events and nightlife.
