Worcester Polytechnic Institute’s Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Kristen Billiar, has received a 3 year REU grant in the amount of $399,674 from the National Science Foundation. The project, "REU Site: Integrated Bioengineering Research, Education, and Outreach Experiences for Females and Underrepresented Minorities at WPI" will provide the opportunity for 8 to 10 undergraduates each year to participate in various projects related to the rapidly growing field of bioengineering. Faculty members from the Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, and Chemistry & Biochemistry departments have created an array of various projects for students to choose from. Each undergraduate participating in the program will conduct research in the laboratory alongside faculty mentors.

This opportunity provides research experience to undergraduate students in the field of bioengineering, as well as personal and professional development training. Each undergraduate involved in the program will receive training in mentoring, and will become a mentor to a middle-school student. This outreach program, called the WPI Bio-Discovery Program, allows undergraduates to be the leaders of a 2-week research experience for these middle-school students. A major goal of this program is to help increase the retention rate of females and minority students in engineering. WPI professor Helen Vassallo from the Business School will be co-piloting the program.
