Grimmgroup research engages undergraduates, graduate students, and postdocs with interfacial chemistry issues related to solar energy conversion. We bring surface science and electrochemical tools to bear on causes of, and routes to eliminate or passivate deleterious chemical states that exist at most semiconductor surfaces. We believe that applying chemical tools to these "surface states" will lead to better control of material properties and more efficient solar conversion devices. Read more...

Before joining WPI in 2011, I spent 11 years at Kent State University as assistant and later associate professor and graduate program coordinator. My research is funded through grants from the National Institutes of Health and the National Science Foundation. I strongly believe in the integration of research and teaching, and throughout my career I have secured several grants aimed at providing undergraduate students with enhanced educational and research experiences. Our approaches include structural and molecular biology, enzymology, biophysics, protein chemistry, fluorescence microscopy, and microbiology. We also employ crystallography, X-ray fluorescence and spectroscopy, and bioinformatics to understand the role of metals in bacterial virulence. Collaboration and camaraderie among postdoctoral fellows, graduate students, and undergraduate students are hallmarks of our work. I enjoy mentoring these young colleagues and guiding their progress. Our research focus is to combine biochemical and biophysical techniques to investigate the structure and function of two classes of membrane proteins. In the first instance, we are investigating the mechanism of a zinc transporter, hZIP4. Despite the central role of this protein in cellular homeostasis, the mechanism of cation transport is not well understood. Secondly, we have been investigating the molecular determinants that help to define the functionality of opsin proteins. Read more...

One of the most fulfilling things a teacher can experience is a transfer of one's excitement and passion for a topic to a student. That impact is one of the many reasons I very much enjoy teaching. At WPI, the seven-week terms keep things changing and allow me to interact with many students throughout the year. The balance between lecture and lab in the WPI curriculum allows me to cater theoretical concepts I present, such that the laboratories are a natural extension of what we've covered. Read more...

I love working with our first-year students in the Great Problems Seminars. Helping students with their first big WPI project is enormously fun, and I learn something new all the time. These courses not only give our students a head start on their major projects, they also can provide a passion and a career path. Watching that develop is one of the most rewarding experiences I have had as a teacher. Read more...
