It Takes a Village to Build a New Ideal
More than a competition, the Solar Decathlon China is a testing ground for innovation in many areas. Teams are judged on a range of standards from architecture and market appeal to energy balance and home entertainment. The project provides an apt platform for students in the WPI Architectural Engineering program, along with those in Civil & Environmental Engineering and other disciplines—and their collaborators from Ghent University, and NYU-Poly. Calling themselves Team BEMANY (BE for Belgium, MA for Massachusetts, and NY for New York), students and faculty are building the Solatrium for the August, 2013 competition in Datong, China.
Community Partners
Team BEMANY have had assistance in the construction phase from Beaton-Kane Construction of Shrewsbury, Mass., a firm known for energy-efficient techniques. Continuing a tradition of advancing public education in the City of Worcester, WPI juniors and seniors worked alongside students from Worcester Technical High School on the construction process.
