National Competition at the University of Akron in Ohio on May 23-24, 2014
The Student Steel Bridge Competition is an inter-collegiate competition that challenges American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) Student Chapters and Clubs to design, fabricate, and erect a 1:10 scale model of a steel bridge. The annual competition is sponsored by ASCE and the American Institute of Steel Construction (AISC). Competitions are held at the regional level – at ASCE Student Conferences – and at the national level. The University of Massachusetts, Lowell hosted the competition for the New England region on April 26, 2014. The event brought student teams from more than a dozen schools.
Categories of competition are display, construction speed, weight, stiffness, construction economy, and structural efficiency. In addition, overall performance is rated. The WPI Student Bridge Team scored first in construction speed and second in display. The WPI team was consistently amongst the top five schools in the categories of weight, stiffness, economy, and efficiency. Overall, the WPI team finished the competition in third place. The WPI ASCE Student Chapter has competed regularly in this competition since its first entry in spring 1993, and this year's performance was its best overall. With a third place finish in the New England Regional Competition, the team is looking forward to competing in the National Student Steel Bridge Competition at the University of Akron in Ohio on May 23-24, 2014.
