WPI Team Wins 3rd Place at SDR Competition!
WPI ECE Students, Matthew Allen and Fei Peng Competed at Virginia Tech Competition
2012 Software-Defined Radio Design Challenge at Virginia Tech, Allen and Peng Place 3rd!
A team of WPI ECE students consisting of Matthew Allen ’13 ECE, and Fei Peng, graduate student ECE, competed in the 2012 Software-Defined Radio Design Challenge hosted by Wireless @ Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, VA on 31 May 2012. The WPI ECE team was advised by Professor Alexander Wyglinski, Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Director of the Wireless Innovation Laboratory (http://www.wireless.wpi.edu/). At the conclusion of this event, the WPI ECE team won 3rd Place in this competition for their design, entitled: “Multi-Hop Radio System.” Their final implementation performed multi-hop routing by sending a text message across two other SDR systems within a frequency range between 5.125 GHz and 5.325 GHz using Dynamic Spectrum Access (DSA) per hop. A custom-built anti-jamming mechanism was developed that enabled resilient communications in the presence of potentially harmful wireless interference, as well as spectrum sensing for identifying possibly unoccupied frequency spectrum in order to support secondary wireless access. A custom handshaking protocol for coordinating the transition of a wireless link to another carrier frequency in the case of wireless interference.
