Kerry Lee Andken, BS

Hometown: Nashua, New Hamsphire
Degree earned from WPI:
BS, Biomedical Engineering

Degrees earned from other institutions:
MS, Boston University

Why did you choose WPI?
I chose WPI for its lack of prerequisites for courses, which allowed me to tailor my education to my abilities. My other major reason for choosing WPI is its amazing Global Studies Program. I went to Hong Kong for my IQP, and I don't think I would have had any other chance to go there in my life. The professors love to teach and care about the students. I wouldn't have gotten the same quality education somewhere else.

Current employer:
I am a licensing manager at the University of Massachusetts Lowell. I handle the patent prosecution and licensing of technologies that come out of the University. Just like WPI, I have lots of very intense, short-term projects where I have to get up to speed on complex technologies from semiconductors to novel polymer composites.

How did WPI's philosophy of Theory and Practice, and working with teams, prepare you for facing real-world challenges in the workplace?
WPI didn't just teach me theories, it taught me how to apply them to real problems--and that engineers solve problems. Having the breadth of knowledge you need to attack a complex issue is key in forming a team. At UMass Lowell, I work with a nuclear engineer, a microbiologist, and a liberal-arts major. We all bring something different to the table to help each other fill our gaps in knowledge.
