WPI Awarded $1.9M Department of Army Grant
A $1.9 million Department of Army grant for “Wearable Wireless Sensor for Multi-scale Physiological Monitoring at WPI" was awarded to WPI Biomedical Engineering Professors Ki H. Chon and Yitzhak Mendelson.
Ki H. Chon (PI, and Head of Biomedical Engineering) and Yitzhak Mendelson (Co-PI, Associate Professor, Biomedical Engineering) are the recipients of a $1.9M three-year Department of Army grant for “Wearable Wireless Sensor for Multi-scale Physiological Monitoring at WPI" along with David McManus and Chad Darling (Co-PIs, assistant professors at UMass Medical School).
U.S. combat experience has demonstrated that acute hemorrhage and subsequent hemodynamic decompensation (shock) account for about half the deaths on the battlefield. Realizing the limits of current pre-symptomatic diagnosis and treatment capabilities on the battlefield, the project involves development of both novel physiological sensors and signal processing algorithms so that the combined approach can provide early detections of hypovolemia and dehydration.
