About the Program

Where Science and Engineering Coexist with Social Science and Humanities

With a caring focus on the diverse aspects of environmental issues, WPI’s Environmental & Sustainability Studies (ESS) program is committed to helping students become knowledgeable and proficient in the methods of scientific and humanistic inquiry.

Through learning that incorporates cutting-edge technology and hands-on involvement, students can take an active role in community issues, strengthen their professional environmental skills, and promote civic responsibility.

At WPI, hands-on means participating in projects that have real-world impact all around the globe. Working within the ESS major, students take on society’s most pressing environmental and sustainability problems through the Interactive Qualifying Project (IQP). In the process they learn how to work in teams, communicate effectively, and form a sense of civic responsibility—skills that can give them an edge in their careers.

The Major Qualifying Project (MQP) helps students articulate and develop a niche within their chosen field that will help them with their professional identity.
