Graduation Year: 2014
I am pursuing my BS in mechanical engineering and will complete that degree in 2013. I enrolled in the five-year BS/MS program and will complete my FPE master's in 2014. I chose WPI because of its size, because of its personal attention to students, and because it offers one of the very few fire protection engineering programs in the country. My interest in the field began when I was able to take an introductory class with FPE department head Kathy Notarianni. She was so enthusiastic about the subject matter and was able to engage everyone in the class. For my Interactive Qualifying Project I went to Costa Rica to work with a local fire department. We created a protocol to inspect ports and marinas based off National Fire Protection Engineering Association (NFPA) codes and existing Costa Rican laws and regulations. Working on projects has allowed me to utilize the skills I learn in my classes. I am able to test my skills through my project work before going out into a professional position. I am a member of the WPI chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (Professor Notarianni is very generous with her time and talent with our group). I am a member of Tau Beta Pi Honor Society and a Charles O. Thompson Scholar, which recognizes outstanding performance by first year students. My goal after graduation is to secure a position in the fire protection industry.
