I am directing a multi-year study to determine the best procedural standards and resource allocation to significantly reduce loss of life and property for both firefighters and civilians. We are working with more than 400 fire departments, compiling detailed demographics of each, along with a database of hundreds of thousands of fire department deployments and outcomes that will be analyzed statistically. My research focuses on the building performance applications of fire dynamics, fire characteristics of materials, and fire models. I am working with several other graduate students. Our goal is to provide knowledge which enables fire protection engineers to develop more effective and efficient designs in the built environment and serve as a basis for improvement of regulatory policy. My research addresses risk-informed, performance-based analysis, design, and regulation as a fundamental element of public safety. In addition to creating new and beneficial knowledge, these efforts influence regulatory decision makers in the United States and abroad, increasing safety and lowering risks to the public. This requires close collaboration with government agencies responsible for developing regulatory policy, particularly for performance-based building regulations. Read more...

Fire protection engineers are asked to assess many fire and life safety risks, and based on their analysis develop workable solutions to these concerns. My goal is to bring a real-world perspective – based on my 20-plus year tenure in the FPE industry – to a student's educational experience so they can effectively apply theory to practice. Nor do the standards provide for accurate measurement of hazardous dust accumulation within the environment. My research addresses combustion, industrial fire protection, and explosion protection. Even today, the fundamental mechanisms driving the spreading of forest fires are not well understood. The elemental aspects of my research focus on understanding the basic phenomena that drive fire behavior. The applied aspects focus on the development of scientific tools useful for firefighting and land management. My students and I develop experimental and analytical techniques to more fully understand fire dynamics and thus better forecast fire behavior under diverse conditions. Read more...
